As we renew our faith and faith of all people through study, devotion, encouraging spiritual practices and lifting up spiritual gifts we recognize that our Middle School and High School Youth are often at a cross-roads – no longer children, but not yet adults. We support our youth on their spiritual journeys with opportunities for study and contemplation, but also fellowship and release as they deal with the pressures of adolescence in today’s times.
After speaking with parents of children in youth in grades 5 and up, we know there is an appetite for and a comfort with socially distanced, outdoor gatherings for our youth. We are now formulating plans using our LMC backyard and donated spaces to allow for in-person programming as long as they weather allows this fall. We hope to update more in early September.
When our young people enter Middle School, they are invited to spend three years taking a deep dive into their faith, the Bible, and what the Lutheran church teaches. After this period of study and preparation, our eighth graders publicly affirm their baptism at Confirmation. Confirmation Class typically meets at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings.
High School Youth are invited to gather between services for their own brand of “Sunday School": fellowship that centers around seeing God in each other’s lives through conversation. The youth spend the hour discussing the places in their lives that they find joy and hardship and how God can be present in all of it.
Senior High Youth gather several times monthly on Wednesday evenings for fun and fellowship. A few times a year, the Middle School Youth join with the Senior High Youth during their regular Wednesday meetings. Both groups enjoy a variety of off-site events as well. Recent events include a multi-church lock-in at Enchanted Castle, a trip to Sky High Sports trampoline park, and a team-building adventure at Chicago Escape Room.
